One would think with that many people to choose from that their would be about 10 or 20 thousand that could play at remarkable levels .

You need about 1300 for the NFL

450 for the NBA

750 for MLB..

A little over 2000 people . Yet we watch lame ass backup QB's , relief pitchers who cant get my 13 year old nephew out.

And dont even get me started on the NBA ...

Sports is at an alltime weak level ..

I've heard that only one in 75 hometown highschool mvps ever play that sport professionally ( NFL or MLB) so you'd think that the elite who do make it pro would be a pretty exclusive club of talent -- there are not too many clumsy oafs on the Yankees. Too many pro teams due to expansion waters the talent pool down though, it's been pretty obvious in hockey in recent years.
I know my hometown highschool hero never amounted to squat, and he scored 9 TD's in the city finals. Not even backup material in college. Yet he turned my town on its ear. Would probably suck for his self-esteem that he went from hero to zero so quickly.
Screw playing pro sports. Go into business.

I believe its the speed factor, the increasing size of defenders that can run in football, QB's aren't getting worse so much as it's just getting harder to play the position.

Sports are definitely at an all time low entertainment wise.

i'd love to see any one of us go out there and play as "shitty" as these guys are. maybe it'll give some perspective on just how good these guys are relative to the other billions of people on the planet.
that "relief pitcher that couldn't get my nephew out" could prob. buckle the knees of 99.9% of people who stepped in the box against him.

ya ok .. the level is at such an all time high .. the effort most of these guys give is pathetic..

i love the " hard to get up this week after a big win last week "

WTF.. its your job to get up and play hard..

all i'm saying is the talent pool seems greater than the talent level .

maybe not..

agreed but you could cut alot of those #s down when u consider half the people are women, good % are children, soon alot will be over 65, etc...
not sayin the level of talent is amazing but shit i'd need to gain 80 pounds of muscle jsut to even be on the same field as these NFL guys

I think you're looking at it wrong. There ARE 100 QB's who are TRULY awesome at what they do. Montana, Elway, Marino, Manning, Brady.....they are the few who truly reach greatness. I guarantee that Koy Detmer would TEAR US UP in a backyard game of football - I don't care how good any of us was in high school. He would absolutely pick apart the average college team, he's just not as gifted as Manning (or McNabb) and doesn't look nearly as good out there because of it. But, he still is one hell of a quarterback if you compare him to the average Joe.

I know some will disagree.......but, I truly think that if you took a guy like Detmer.......or any journeyman backup (not necessarily a rookie backup) they would make the best NCAA defense look pretty bad.

I also read something a few years back about the odds of making it to the big leagues (MLB). I think the report said that, on average, 1 or 1.5 kids from each high school in America gets a college scholarship. And of those, like 1 in 100 ever sees a day in the bigs.

Basically, 1 guy from each high school team will play major college ball......and something like 2 from each major college team will ever get drafted............and less than half of those ever see a day in the bigs.

Its the culture. Its difficult learning to dribble a ball or hit a baseball while staring at your cellphone. Kids are real good at video games though
